St. Louis

Well, has everyone recovered from their time in St. Louis? What a great long weekend of Wresting, friends, family, green, beer, oh and some work for me of course. This was my first NCAA Wrestling Championship and the first time Ludus Tours also has attended. I had asked a lot of people what to expect and they did a pretty good job, but of course, there were things that I wasn’t “warned” about.

I knew St. Louis was a beer city, but I was still surprised as soon as I got to the Peabody, I was greeted by multiple attendants selling beer before I even entered the building and beer was everywhere I turned. I immediately knew this event was a lot of people’s biggest party of the year.

Day one really went as planned with no upsets and day two only brought a few upsets. I had heard the Friday night session to win All-American honors and the go ahead to the finals on Saturday was the most exciting session of wrestling and everyone was right. Friday night did not disappoint with great matches and lots of overtimes and hooked me as a college wrestling fan for life.

Going to an event like this by yourself can be intimating at first, but at the same time allows you to just go with the flow. I probably sat in 6 different sections and 2 different luxury boxes before the action was over. I realized the boxes are a hot commodity and what a lot of people want and are hard to get, so in the future look for a Ludus Tours/Wrestling Tours box to be occupied during the NCAA Championships.

Looking back with this being my first NCAA Championship, I want to thank the wrestling community so much for welcoming me and Ludus Tours in. It was great to meet people that have heard of us and meet new people that are excited to know that we make traveling to the Olympics or a World Championship an easy and affordable process. We are a sponsor of USA Wrestling and fully support the International USA teams, but we also love all wrestling action, so we were thrilled to be in St. Louis and become a part of this great celebration.

Next up is the Olympic Trials in Iowa City. There will be about 9000 people in attendance compared to the 17,000 that were in St. Louis, but I have a feeling it will feel like a lot more than 9000 with the excitement and anticipation that will be inside of everyone waiting to see who will be headed to London to compete for the United States?  Will it go as planned or will there be some upsets?

One month until Iowa City!! Will we see you there?

NCAA Championships – St. Louis

Well, we are only one day away from being in St. Louis for the 2012 NCAA Div. 1 Wrestling Championships. This will be my first time to the yearly event that I’ve heard so much about. Its been fun to hear different people’s traditions involving NCAA.

One father and son that is booked to go to London with us have made this a yearly tradition for 7 years now. Its the one event they do with just dad and the only son into wrestling. There are at least three people driving from South Dakota down to St. Louis. A family of 7 from New York, coaches wives from Columbus. I can’t wait to get to town and become part of this tradition.

Its been great to see how involved USA Wrestling is with the NCAA. In most sports the relationship between the two doesn’t seem this strong, but it looks as each one benefits the other, so why not embrace it. With 2012 being an Olympic year, USA Wrestling has a lot of presence with a video of great Olympic matches, autograph sessions with the top wrestlers of the USA Wrestling Team, the hall of fame, the National Team Dual, and welcoming the public to more than 1 USA Wrestling team practice.

The talk so far is for Penn State to repeat as champions. Missouri stepped up and beat our Oklahoma State and they could see some of that home mat advantage they had at the Big 12 Tournament in Columbia being in St. Louis. There are the favorites, but what I always enjoy are the underdogs that surprise everyone. I can’t to see who takes on that role this year.

Its looking to be a great long weekend in St. Louis and we can’t wait to see you there. Stop by the USA Wrestling booth at Fan Fest and say hi to Wrestling2012!

Safe travels everyone.

Conference Championship Time

Well, its that time for conference championships. The Pac-12 was held in Boise, ID by Boise State last weekend. Oregon State came out on top of Boise State to claim the title of champions. This win gives Oregon State 7 automatic bids to the NCAA Championship in St. Louis March15-17.

This weekend are going to be the other conference championships. Oklahoma State is favored to take home the Big 12 title and this tournament will be held in Columbia, MO. I’m sure Iowa State would like to beat off the Cowboys for this years title.

The MAC Championships will be taking place at Ohio University this year and Kent State is the favored team heading in.

The most anticipated conference championship will again be the Big 10 Tournament. This year Purdue is the host and has some tough competition heading into this weekend. Defending National Champion, Penn State is the favorite heading in this weekend, but the Big Ten always is ready to provide some of the stiffest competition in college. The big 10 has been allotted 74 spots for the NCAA championships. The BTN (Big Ten Network) has increased coverage this year to show more wrestling than previous years.

Best of luck to all teams competing this weekend and can’t wait to see who is crowned champions.

Busy Time for Wrestling

Well, its that time for you high school wrestlers. State Championships have begun across the country. I’m seeing pictures of Denver’s Pepsi Center with mats covering a basketball court and same scene across the country moving from the local gym up to one of the largest arenas in each state. Pretty amazing sight for you kids that have been working so hard all season to prepare for this. Best of luck to all of you high schoolers!  Feel free to update your results in our comment section.

On the college level, we are exactly a month away from NCAA Championships in St. Louis. Everybody is thrilled to be back in St. Louis for this event as they put on a great show for us. Will Penn State repeat? Will there be more amazing stories like Anthony Robles? Conference Championships are coming up fast in just two weeks from now. Time to get everyone healthy and ready to go.

On the International level, next weekend is the Pan American Wrestling Championships will be in Colorado Springs. This event will be showcasing some of the worlds best as past Olympians and World Champions meet in preparation for the London 2012 Olympics. The Pan American Wrestling Championships are held every four years and 2008 was the last time it was held on US ground. The US team lineup has not been released yet, but we should know soon.

There is a lot to keep up with right now, so feel free to tell us what you are up to and how your meets are going.

Great Moments of Olympic Opening Ceremonies

If you haven’t already been counting down to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, it is time to start! January 27, 2012 marks six months until all eyes will be on London and the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Can you remember the Opening Ceremonies in Beijing? I’m still amazed watching it and can’t wait to see what London has in store for us. Thinking about the Opening Ceremonies, it makes me remember so many amazing sights that are printed in my memory forever. Here are some of the highlights over past Olympic Opening Ceremonies from my perspective.

My first memory of an Opening Ceremony was 1984 in Los Angeles. I was living an hour outside of LA and knew I would be attending a few Olympic events, so this was something I had to watch on TV to really understand what this whole Olympics thing was about. I was 7 at the time. Los Angeles was the year that someone flew into and around the stadium wearing a futuristic jet pack and who can forget every single fan sitting in the stands taking part to hold up a card to make the flags of all the participating countries. I noticed looking back at some videos that these ceremonies were during the day. 1992 took the Olympics to Seoul, South Korea and I remember seeing WELCOME written on the field by partipicants and it could be seen from the aerial shots from high above the stadium. 1992 took the Olympics to Barcelona, Spain. For Americans, this was exciting because it was the debut of “The Dream Team” in basketball and watching Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson walk in the parade of atheltes. This was also the first Olympics that held majority of the ceremony at night under the lights. Barcelona recreated waves and a ship on the field before the arrival of the Olympic flag and flame to celebrate Spain’s involvement of exploration. 1992 was also the last year that both Winter and Summer Olympics were the same year. The Winter Olympics went ahead two years later picking back up in 1994.

1996 brought the Olympics back to to the United States in Atlanta, Georgia. These Opening Ceremonies had a great tribute to the Ancient Greek Olympics forming the Temple Of Zeus. Being an American and watching the ceremony in the USA, its always a treat to finally get to see all of the American athletes walk into the stadium last. 1996 was special because I knew athletes competing that I was in college with and remember trying to find them on TV. The highlight for sure was when the great Muhammad Ali was the last person to receive the passing flame and jog the last leg to light the Olympic torch to mark the beginning of the 1996 Olympics. The entire Olympics were special having them on US soil even down to an American Gymnast doing her floor routine to The Devil Went Down to Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band. Sydney, Australia hosted the 2000 Olympics and it seemed as if the world had an extra level of excitement to be “Down Under”. I can never forget the Olympic Rings lit on the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the roar as Kathy Freeman lit the Olympic Torch and her story and what she did to unite a country through the sport and the Olympics. This was also another Olympics where I saw college friends on mine on TV walking into Olympic Stadium representing the multiple countries they were from.

2004 brought the Olympics back to where the history of the Olympics began in Athens, Greece. This ceremony had so much history representing bringing the past to the present by having the Olympic flame travel from 100 years prior into the current Olympic Stadium onto the ground ending with the lighting of the Olympic Rings for the world to see and celebrate the opening and the history of the modern day Olympics.

And the last Olympics 2008 in Beijing, China where the Opening Ceremonies were taken to another level. There aren’t even words to describe how incredible they were. From the adorable girl flying around the stadium to the perfect precision of the drummers captivating not just the fans in the stands, but the entire world for even the next four years to come.

So now we are only six months away from the spectacular show that London will put on for the world. The day will even begin at 8:00 AM when the city of London will be put on hold to ring bells. I can’t imagine what it will sound like, but couldn’t be more excited to be there to hear it and be a part of it. Six months to go for another night that the entire world will come together to celebrate this amazing thing called the Olympics!
